We stopped, cut the cord, helped deliver the placenta, and, thank God, both mother and baby were well. Then we continued our journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we reached the village, we met the community leaders. They told us that one in ten children died before reaching their fifth birthday. We also discovered a man practicing traditional \u201cmedicine\u201d: he was cutting the uvula of sick children and charging ten thousand Sudanese pounds per child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We gathered the community under the old sycamore tree and started treating the children. In two days, we treated five hundred. Rain poured, but we kept working under a roofless building, covering it with plastic sheeting and holding it down with stones. The head of our organization helped to register the patients, until a gust of wind dropped one of those stones from above, barely missing her. No one was hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the second day, the village sheikh came running.<br>\u201cThere\u2019s a woman in a nearby house,\u201d he said, \u201cthree days in labor and she still hasn\u2019t delivered. Please, come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We went, three of us and our project manager. The woman was exhausted, clinging to a rope, trying to push. I examined her: placenta praevia, heavy bleeding. We arranged immediate transfer. The local \u201cambulance\u201d was a camel, with two beds: one for the patient, the other loaded with stones for balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She reached Kalokting, then was referred on to Kass Hospital, where she had a cesarean section.
